EbonyMeaning:NAEbony is one of the most intensely black woods known, which, combined with its very high density (it is one of the woods that sink in water), fine texture, and ability to polish very smoothly, has made it very valuable as an ornamental wood. Traditionally, black piano and harpsichord keys were ebony. The problem with using ebony in jewellery is that it has no real grain and can look a little like plastic. The ebony we are using at the moment was given to me by a local wood turner and is thought to be over 100 years old. |
